The Transcona Shops 100th Anniversary Celebration

An Update:

Saturday, June 2nd is fast approaching and plans are now well underway. Several CN Pensioners have volunteered their time and efforts and as such we will be entering a float in the Hi-Neighbour Festival Parade which is part of the 100th Celebration. Plans are coming together nicely and we expect that the decorations committee will reveal a float that is decorated in a simple but fun manner. Thanks to CN, we have been able to pull the necessary components together in order to make this float entry possible.

In addition to the float, we are thrilled that one of our very own pensioners, Ken Rigaux, is not only willing to volunteer his time, but has also graciously agreed to volunteer the use of his classic vehicle --- a 1926 Model T Roadster which will be used to drive the Parade Marshal -- Sameh Fahmy, CN's Sr Vice-President Engineering, Mechanical and Supply Management.

Besides participating in the parade, we also plan to have a display at the Open House which will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on June 2nd. Our display will include some old photos plus we will also have on hand brochures about our Association as well as a supply of our most recent newsletter. The highlight will be a magnificent display courtesy of CN employee, Paul Meneer, who has one of the largest private collections of railway memorabilia and artifacts in the country and we are so excited to share this event with him.

Some of our members have signed up to volunteer to be part of the parade while others plan to volunteer their time at the Open House including staffing the display area. We can always find a spot for more volunteers so if you wish to help out, please just contact either Janet Lewis Anderson or Linda Schram.

The Transcona Shops which officially opened on January 8th, 1913 at a cost of $6 million, employing 5,000 men, will actually be celebrating 100 years of operation this June in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of The Town of Transcona.

Being the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the industry that gave birth to Transcona, CN will be hosting an Open House on Saturday, June 2nd, 2012. Active employees, CN Pensioners and the general public are invited to attend.

The day will begin with the Hi Neighbour Festival Parade, with Sameh Fahmy (CN's Senior Vice-President Engineering, Mechanical & Supply Management) as the Parade Marshal. At the conclusion of the parade, Transcona Shops will officially open their doors for guided tours. There will be displays and other events, so please stay tuned for updates.

To all CN Pensioners - CN has asked if we would like to participate in this event. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact anyone of the Executive Council. More information will be forthcoming in our newsletter.
