An Important Reminder to All CN Pensioners:
-
who are covered under another group health insurance plan such as your spouse's group insurance plan
-
whose spouse is covered under another group health insurance plan
At retirement, you may have decided not to cover yourself and/or your spouse under the Health Care Plan for CN Pensioners and elected instead to cover your spouse only or yourself and your spouse under your spouse's group health insurance plan.
Should you and/or your spouse lose your health care protection under such spouse's plan, you and/or your spouse are entitled to join the CNPA Blue Cross Plan at the time the other coverage terminates provided you join within 31 days and provided the monthly premiums can be paid from your monthly pension payment. Note that if you reside in the province of Quebec and if you or your spouse are under 65 years of age, you must join the CNPA Blue Cross Plan for an Option providing drug coverage.
Surviving Spouses:
Upon the death of the pensioner, a surviving spouse may enrol or re-enrol in our Plan, even if the pensioner cancelled or declined the coverage, provided the monthly premiums can be paid from the survivor monthly pension payment.
Mercer always advise the surviving spouse of their options in the package that is mailed out at the time of death of the Pensioner. However, if they are covered by what they believe to be a better plan and continue for a number of years it is possible they would forget about the options available.
The extended enrolment period will therefore also apply for surviving spouses who have lost their protection under the Nortel heath insurance plan.
